Lavish on Screens

I recently watched What Maisie Knew and The Great Gatsby. What Maisie Knew is a very chilled out, cool-looking film with a heartbreaking story about a little girl who is living a privileged life but torn between her parents’ separation. What I love the most about this film is that every little detail is so well-thought of. Oh, and the great acting of course. I instantly became very much aware of how loaded her rockstar mom is just by looking at the apartment they are living in. It’s probably the coolest apartment I’ve seen on screen so far! Maisie’s wardrobe is as cool as the apartment.

The other characters dress really well too, very appropriate to their personalities. Susanna’s (Julianne Moore) outfits remind me of Alison Mosshart from The Kills.

It’s funny how I disliked Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby for being too vulgar in terms of showing the hedonistic life. Because Maisie has the same privileged lifestyle (but set in the noughties). Yet both films are so different. With Gatsby, I feel like there is no heart in the film itself. It feels so empty. What I like about Gatsby are probably the room-full-of-flowers scene and the costumes. And that’s just for the aesthetic reason.

I think it’s ok to show how the ridiculously rich live on film, but it has to be done justifiably. Like Melancholia for example, I find the film focuses more on the characters. Yes, they live in a huge mansion and yes, they have the best wedding party, but these are all just details to strengthen the story.

Mademoiselle C

Holy c!!! Found this on Fashion Copious. And I’m thrilled.

The trailer looks a bit tacky in my opinion, reminds me of Project Runway songs. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Project Runway very much but how the show edited is just plain tacky. The conversation between Donatella and Carine at the end feels so scripted. Maybe this will just be a French version of September Issue, but Carine is my hero and I’m just excited to see her story.

Last year, I waited patiently for Black Swan. This year, my number one on my must-watch list is Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. I haven’t watched any of his films, but this looks like a film I would enjoy. I was going to see Antichrist, but did not have the time (and to be honest, I was a bit scared to watch it). Haven’t seen Dunst in a while and I’ve loved her since Bring It On (I know, right?!). So I’m excited to see her here (she got Best Actress at Cannes for this role). Is this the year of Kirsten Dunst? I hope so! Oh, Gainsbourg and Skarsgaard are also the reason why I’m dying to see this movie.

Sally Albright

I just watched When Harry Met Sally for the…5th time? Yes, I love this movie. I guess it’s only natural to watch a romcom on a valentine’s day. Meg Ryan was just awesome..she managed to look so pretty in those baggy trousers and big hair. This is just some random polyvore I made (again) inspired by the character, Sally Albright.

And Harry would say…”You should wear skirts more often”
